Change pace across the A240 corridor
The A240 runs from Ewell Road along Tolworth Broadway, crosses the A3 and continues by Kingston Road towards Jubilee Way. Moving through that corridor teaches you to notice a change in road character before you reach it. You can adjust speed, increase the following gap and look further ahead as traffic and lane demands build.
Choose a lane while there is still time
Tolworth Roundabout sits where the main local corridor meets the A3. A safe approach begins with signs and lane markings, not a last-second move at the give-way line. Decide which exit you need, settle into the correct lane and keep checking traffic from the right as well as the space immediately ahead.
As you travel around, signal for the exit at the right time and leave room for cyclists. This is a practical place to combine the Highway Code routine with steady speed and accurate position.
Look further ahead on Ewell Road
Ewell Road is the A240, with frequent buses, heavy motor traffic and the C29 cycle corridor sharing the same broad route. Keep your eyes beyond the vehicle in front so you can spot a bus stopping, a cyclist continuing beside you or a pedestrian approaching a crossing. Looking further ahead gives you more time to adjust your speed and plan the next turn safely.
Check the parking signs before stopping
Zone T includes the west side of Ewell Road between South Terrace and Kingsdowne Road, plus nearby streets such as Croylands Drive, Langley Road and Oakhill Road. Before pulling in, identify the bay or yellow line you intend to use and read the sign beside it. A convenient-looking gap is not enough to prove that stopping is permitted.
Expect two reasons to slow on Douglas Road
Douglas Road contains Tolworth Junior School and the Douglas House address used by Tolworth test centre. School activity can bring children, adults and parked vehicles close to the kerb, while test-centre traffic may be entering or leaving nearby. Ease off before the view becomes restricted and keep scanning both footways as well as side roads.
Manage kerbside movement by Tolworth station
Tolworth station is on Kingston Road and has a listed drop-off or pick-up point. Near the station, look past the nearest car for pedestrians, doors opening and vehicles moving away from the kerb. A little extra space and a controlled speed make it easier to respond without a sharp brake or hurried steering change.
